DCC Alumni Spotlight – Abby Bertrand Heasley
I was so thrilled when I found out I was going to be interviewing DCC Alumni, Abby Bertrand Heasley. Having the honor of growing up around the organization, I knew Abby during her journey of being a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. It was so nice to catch up with her and talk to her as a DCC sister, especially since she was once a role model for me when I was little.
Abby grew up loving the Dallas Cowboys. She dressed as a cheerleader for Halloween when she was in the first grade and was always sporting Cowboy’s gear with her dad around the house. She always had the dream of becoming one of America’s Sweethearts, but it wasn’t until high school where dance became her passion and when she decided to audition. After high school she went on to major in dance at Texas Tech and minored in exercise fitness. She was on the pom squad for 3 years, earning her spot as captain her junior year, and then parted ways from that to be a part of the dance team. After graduating From Texas Tech University, she achieved the dream of becoming a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader.
Abby will never forget the WOW factor of experiencing her first game as a rookie on the squad. “The very first game was surreal. I was having to hold back ugly tears the entire time.” After a nervous process of going through auditions and then Training Camp all summer, it’s a special day to just dance all out because you DID IT!
Although Abby’s time of being a cheerleader was just two years, she explained that she wouldn’t do anything different and that she is proud of her experience and time as a DCC. She will never forget the practices and game days spent with her best friends. If she could, she would go back and do it all over again just as is. She got to experience the NFL draft in Chicago in 2015 with DCC Alumni Nicole, which was her last appearance, making it the greatest ending to her time that she could have asked to finishing out her career.
Abby is now living in Colorado with her loving husband and two daughters, Hattie and Shiloh. She continues to share her love of dance with the nonprofit that she began, Harmony Dance Team – a charity that allows kids with special needs to also shine and pursue their love of dance. It has brought her many blessings and something she is so proud of. You have a heart of gold Abby!
