DCC Alumni Spotlight – Opal Bush

By DCC Kat

Opal Bush represents what the DCC standard is all about! What is that standard you may ask? Well, it’s an unwritten decree but it seems to produce women who are multifaceted in their dedication, character, and community. After her time spent on the team, she continues to take what she has learned into her everyday life. Here is a little snippet of why I (and you will too) love the fabulous, Opal Bush!

Who is Opal Bush?

Opal was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). Upon graduation, she accepted a job in Dallas and from there the rest is history! Opal arrived at auditions, alongside thousands of other girls, with a different background than most. Growing up, she was a cheerleader and knew how to dance, but did not have technical training upon entering the DCC world. However, in DCC fashion, there were other hopefuls there to help her in areas that she lacked! Toni Washington and Shelly Boston Bramhall took her under their wing and pushed her to become the dancer that meets the DCC standards. What’s important to note, is her persistence, drive, and natural ability to adapt that helped to shape her into becoming one of America’s Sweethearts!

While On The Team

“I really mean, I had to put in the work, but it was the best time I’ve had!” says Opal. Being the first girls under the Jerry Jones era, Opal was able to experience all that DCC has to offer. With the direction of 3 DCC legends, Suzanne, Kelli, and Judy, she went on USO tours, appeared in magazines, and cheered at Texas Stadium.  Opal was able to impact the lives of thousands of people, young and old, on and off the field – all while being a wife, daughter, and teammate.

What We Should All Take Away

Opal’s advice to me, “Savor every moment…and just think, I’m a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader!”  I couldn’t agree more! This opportunity does not last forever, and I treasure each moment with my teammates during appearances and dancing on the field. During my time on the team, the DCC standard should be propelling me every day to be 2% better. Whether that is through discipline- showing up ready and not just ready, but prepared, learning how to work with different personalities, and looking presentable on the outside and refining my heart on the inside.  To obtain ‘ The DCC Standard’, girls will transform into young women.

Opal’s Golden Nuggets

Proverbs 19: 20-21 (NLT) – “Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life. You can make many plans, but the LORD’S purpose will prevail.”

Opal – “Remember to live in the moment because you will never get that moment again.”
