DCC Alumni Spotlight – Brooke Sorenson Nix

Brooke Sorenson Nix

I had the pleasure of chatting with Brooke (Sorenson) Nix, a 5-year Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader from 2006-2011. Brooke currently resides in Del Ray Beach with her husband, former MLB player, Laynce Nix, and her two adorable sons. After retirement, she coached the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders until 2018 and still offers her expertise from time to time. She now owns a popular clothing store called Brooke and Arrow.

While on the squad, she traveled around the world on USO tours as a member of Show Group and attended the CMT Music Awards. She had the opportunity to dance alongside huge names in music, including: Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, the Jonas Brothers, Chris Daughtry, Keith Urban, Drake, and more. Some of her favorite memories as a cheerleader include: performing at the Thanksgiving Day halftime shows, calendar shoots, the excitement of gameday, team workouts, and the “good nerves” that come along with training camp. From her rookie season, her favorite memories were when Kelli announced that she made the team and showing her Mom the pregame performance at our ‘Friends and Family’ event. This year, Kelli announced the team by reading the girls a press release debuting the “36 girls” that would be wearing the iconic uniform at the first game of the season. All of the former training camp candidates knew they had made the team since there were only 36 girls left in camp at this point. She also has countless memories from the exciting opportunities she experienced as a member of Show Group, which she was on for all five years. However, Brooke said that the most memorable game in her DCC career was her first game back after tearing her ACL at the end of her rookie season.

Brooke provided me with so many words of wisdom during our Zoom call and really reminded me how truly lucky I am to be in this moment right now. “Sometimes you really just have to stop and remind yourself: Holy cow… I am a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader,” she said. She reflected on the speech Kelli gives at tryouts about meeting your bridesmaids within this organization. At her wedding, she had 13 bridesmaids and all but two of them were cheerleaders. “No matter where you go, it’s always going to be with you. It will always be a part of you and you will always be a part of it.” She told me to soak it all in and not let a moment pass without being grateful. She has learned to appreciate the value of the organization more so after being removed from it. “Have fun in every moment. You’ll miss the late nights and the hard workouts. You’ll miss it all when it’s gone.”

Talking to Brooke was the highlight of my week and served as such an amazing reminder of what this team means to me. Brooke was so easy to talk to and we had so much in common, thanks to the ties of this incredible organization. Even though we never cheered together, we are bonded by this sisterhood and we are reminded by the gold ring we wear on our pinky. I am so grateful to have such a supportive and encouraging group of alumni and truly loved getting the opportunity to speak with Brooke. I hope to inspire a future cheerleader the same way she inspired me!
