DCC Kat – Notes to Self

DCC Kat – Notes to Self

Dear 7-year-old Kat,

You may not realize it now, but what you are going through is needed. I know you may be sad because you cannot live with Mommy anymore; but moving into Oma (grandma) and Papooh’s (grandpa) house will be the best thing that’s ever happened to you. Mommy is working more jobs, so you can say, “YES!” to all the opportunities this world will throw your way.

Don’t grow up too fast, slow down and have fun where you are. Oma and Papooh love raising you – be their “baby” for as long as you can!

Dear 14-year-old Kat,

Stop worrying about trying to fit in, when you were always meant to stand out. You don’t even know it, but pretty soon, you are about to make history! Yep! You will become the very first African American to win the title of Miss NC Outstanding Teen AND Miss NC Teen USA. Yes, I know you have never done a pageant, but honey, you are going to win every pageant you compete in. Why? Your personality is relatable; you’re smart and ambitious; you’re uniquely qualified; but most importantly your black is beautiful.

Dear 21-year-old Kat,

Look at what you have accomplished so far! I know it’s easy to think “there is always more”, but perfection is an illusion, and you need to give yourself some grace. I’m excited for you, because this year you will truly learn who perfection is. You will rededicate your life, to the one, who gave His life for you! This will be the best decision you will ever make, and a shift will start to change on the inside of you.

Dear Kat,

Your life truly matters! You are fearfully and wonderfully made. No person or circumstance will change the plans God has set for you. I give you permission to take that risk, work harder, be vulnerable, heal from the past, fully embrace who you are and use your gifts to serve yourself and others. Always remember, this is the day that The Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it! – Psalm 118:24

I Love You,
Your Future Self
