DCC Alumni Spotlight – Shannon Hall Salter

DCC Alumni Spotlight – Shannon Hall Salter

I had the pleasure of speaking with Shannon Hall Salter, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader from 1987-1990, and learning a little about her time on the team. She was a member of Show Group for her second and third season, as well as a 2nd group leader. She cheered with Kelli Finglass, the organization’s current director. I asked Shannon what it was like cheering with Kelli and she responded that she was a wonderful leader and an excellent veteran to follow. She has a photo of Kelli napping on former director, Suzanne Mitchell’s shoulder. She mentioned how you could clearly see the mentorship between Suzanne and Kelli, and she knew at the time that Kelli would be an amazing successor and the only person she had in mind who could handle the task. She also made a point to mention that Kelli is a lovely singer !

One of Shannon’s favorite memories from her years as a DCC was going on tour to Korea and dancing in shows every day and night. She mentioned how great of an honor it was to go on base and meet members of our military. She also visited Turkey, Greece, and Australia while on USO tours, and stated how shocked she was that some of the men would extended their tours just to see the cheerleaders.
While on the team, Shannon had the honor of gracing the cover of the 1990 calendar. She found out in a sweet way: the girls used to get a Cowboys Newsletter in their locker each week and one day she got to her locker early. Her teammate, Michele Taylor Sharp screamed because there was an order form on the back to purchase calendars and you could see the image of Shannon on the cover. She remembers the moment vividly of looking at Suzanne with a smile on her face, responding, “it’s a good shot!”
Shannon reminisced on several funny moments during her time as a cheerleader, including when she had surgery and couldn’t get her pinky ring off so she begged the doctors to allow her to cover it with a bandaid instead of cutting it off. We also talked in length about how excited we were for this season’s auditions. As an alumni, she usually keeps up with the girls who make it to training camp and eventually the team, but this year she has someone extra special to root for… her daughter, DCC Rookie Madeline!
